现年32岁的瘦弱女子爱丽丝·伊万斯（布莱特妮·墨菲 Brittany Murphy 饰）是一个小有名气的编剧，由于当年和男友的纷争，造成爱丽丝神经容易紧张，无法专心工作。眼看截稿日期临近，而且听闻男友出狱，于是她跑到偏远乡村，将自己隔绝在一幢无人别墅，希望能够静心完成作品。
然而事与愿违，空空荡荡的别墅反令爱丽丝的心愈加紧张。诡异的梦、自动打开的门、渗人的哭声以及一串神秘的脚印，仿佛都在昭示一个未知生命体的存在。爱丽丝开始有意识探究这幢房子的秘密，她找到前主人戴维留在这里的一卷录影带，不知不觉，她便融入戴维夫妇的世界中。孰真孰假，亦真亦幻，概莫能辨……
